Herbal Lemonade with Turmeric, Roselle, & Lemongrass

This is one of my go-to herbal preparations. It’s a refreshing way to incorporate more herbal medicine into my day-to-day. For me, it never gets old.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon of water

  • 2 thumbs fresh turmeric, chopped

  • 1/4 cup dried roselle

  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh lemongrass

  • 1/2 cup to 1 cup sour citrus juice (I used 3 sour mandarins to obtain 1/2 cup juice)

  • 1/2 cup to 1 cup raw brown sugar (or sweetener of choice, raw honey is a great option)

Everyone has a different flavor palette and may prefer more or less sweetness and acidity. I personally use only 1/2 cup sour citrus juice and 1/2 brown sugar in this recipe, but you may prefer more. Check out the YouTube video embedded below to watch my full process of making this lemonade!

Method

  1. Bring the water and turmeric to a simmer for about 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and let the tea cool slightly to about 200 degrees F (93 degrees C). We want the water steaming but not boiling when we pour over the roselle and lemongrass.

  2. Place dried roselle and fresh lemongrass in a clean, large jar or vessel.

  3. Pour the hot turmeric tea, chunks and all, over the roselle and fresh lemongrass.

  4. Cover and steep for 2 to 4 hours or until completely cooled.

  5. Once cooled, strain the tea, cover, and set aside.

  6. Add sour citrus juice and the brown sugar to the strained tea. Stir well, then taste and add more sugar or juice to your liking.

  7. Bottle your lemonade and refrigerate until cold! Enjoy!
